Reparenting Boxes (Mobile)
What this guide covers
Moving boxes into a new parent using a QR scanner on mobile — useful when you are physically reorganizing storage and want the digital hierarchy to match.
Prerequisites
- Phone browser pointing at your ItemChaos instance
- Camera permissions granted
- QR labels printed on the boxes you want to reorganize
Opening the page
Tap Mobile Reparent Boxes in the nav (hamburger ≡ on mobile).
Step 1 — Scan the Parent Box
The page shows the heading Step 1: Scan Parent Box QR Code with two options:
Option A — QR scan: Tap Start QR Scanner. Point your camera at the parent box's label. When recognized, you see "Parent box {ID} selected!" in a toast notification. The page moves to Step 2 automatically.
Option B — Manual selection: Tap in the Select a parent box field and type to search, then tap a result.
If the scanned Box ID does not exist in the system, a new box is created automatically with that ID.
Step 2 — Scan Child Boxes
The header now shows Step 2: Scan Child Boxes and the parent box ID.
Continuous Scan Mode
There is a toggle: Continuous Scan Mode — Enabled / Disabled.
- Disabled (default): Scanner stops after each successful scan. Tap Start Scanning Child Boxes again for each box.
- Enabled: Scanner keeps running. Useful for processing many boxes in a row without tapping between scans.
Adding child boxes
Tap Start Scanning Child Boxes (or Start Continuous Scanning). As you scan each box, "Child box {ID} added!" appears and the box is listed under Child Boxes (N):. Each listed box has a Remove button if you scanned the wrong one.
Constraints:
- You cannot add the same box twice (duplicate scan is ignored with a warning).
- You cannot add the parent box as its own child.
Finishing scanning
Tap Stop Scanning to stop the camera.
Applying the reparent
Once you have all child boxes listed, tap Reparent N Boxes. All listed boxes are moved under the selected parent in one operation. A "Successfully reparented N boxes!" toast confirms the change.
Tap Start Over at any time to reset and begin with a different parent.
Step 3 — Complete
The page shows Reparenting Complete! with a count of how many boxes were moved. Two buttons:
- Reparent More Boxes — resets to Step 1 to pick a new parent
- Back to Menu — returns to the previous page
Troubleshooting
Scanned box says "Box not found" then creates a new box This is correct behavior — if the Box ID is not in the system, a new empty box is created so it can be placed in the hierarchy.
Cannot add parent box as child The system prevents circular references. Move the boxes into a different parent first.
Reparent button is greyed out No child boxes have been scanned yet. Add at least one child box before reparenting.
